NFL linebacking great Junior Seau retired after 16 seasons, most of them as a standout for the San Diego Chargers.Jeff Sez: The last three seasons with Miami Junior became Senior Seau, hobbled by injuries. I half-expected to see him using one of those walkers with the tennis balls attached to the feet (which has to be the ultimate irony for an old codger – adorn their walker with THE symbol of total stud mobility). But they didn’t call him “Say Ow!” for nothin’ – in his hey day he turned running backs into tapioca.
I would not steal his bowl of Chex Mix at the sports bar just yet, lads. Even without a ring, the Hall has to be around the corner.
ANNIKA BREAKS CENTURIES OF STOICISM, LEAPS IN LAKE
Annika Sorenstam shot a record-tying 65 on her home course in Stockholm to win the Scandinavian TPC.Jeff Sez: Tough for us Mediterranean types to understand the Scando mindset, but her post-victory leap into the lake was the equivalent of me saying, “Sure, I’ll try heroin right into the eyeball.”
Admittedly, she leaped in with her mom and sis, all fully garbed, so don’t go looking for a pictorial in Maxim anytime soon. But she may be through her Ingmar Bergman stage and into a little party time.
