Hey folks! Managing Editor Chet Waterhouse
here! Supposed to have a recipe, but unless you consider
hand-crankin' the top off a can of cocktail franks and poppin'
the lid on the seven-pound wholesale tin of dip-size Fritos
"cooking," I'd rather just tell you about my absolute
three favorite road holiday meals!
3 - Thanksgiving '89 - Grouchy's, 30 miles east of Eau Claire,
Wisconsin. Trapped there by a blizzard after calling the
St. Croix River Catfish Wrassle for the Fishing Radio Network.
Grouchy did something with his frozen pork tenderloins and
some Mrs. Goop's Tangelo Marmalade. The gallon of McFartle's
Pancake Whisky may have helped, but ever since, when I smell
deep-fried pork tenderloin, my mouth goes to pieces. PS
- pepper on tapioca. Try it.
2 - Christmas Eve '01, Hellvetico's, in Nipsup, Oregon -
Trapped there by a freak snowstorm after doing play-by-play
on the Mountain Goat Paralympics for Animal Planet. Some
kind of ski-town pasta joint, but because of the snow, no
pasta shipment got in that weekend. They had to serve their
sauces over the only grain they had - oatmeal. And I am
telling you, we ate them out of house and home. Something
about no gluten that just made it click! They changed names
to "Oats 'N Gravyboats!" Now the line's longer
than the one at the newstand when the new 'Maxim' comes
out!
1 - Christmas '97, Sargeant Soup's, Bluetoe, Colorado. Trapped
there by an ice storm after hosting the Drunk Lumberjack
Challenge. Power outage forced Cortez and his assistant,
Gene the hippie, to use the only ingredients that weren't
spoiled - liverwurst, peanuts, oregano, some olive juice,
a Baby Ruth and a row of Townhouse crackers. Suffice it
say, "Bluetoe Stew" is now on the menu at the
Ritz Carlton Manhattan. Just goes to show ya, in food, like
in life, it's kinda all about proportions!
These recipes brought to you by Aunt Esther's Christmas
Cake! Don't ask - just enjoy!
This is Chet Waterhouse reminding you to play with pain!
