He also cut himslf shaving. |
Boston, MA - Boston
Red Sox pitcher Kurt Schilling
solved his pesky right ankle problems by cutting off the
ankle in the Red Sox clubhouse prior to Sunday's game and
taking the mound on the bloody stump. Schilling borrowed
a serrated knife from the clubhouse buffet chef and did
the job himself. He also lost his glove hand in a pumpkin-carving
accident, which "was kind of a nuisance" but did
make him the first starter and second-ever baseball pitcher
to take the mound with two bloody stumps. Former St.
Louis Cardinal reliever Al Hrabosky
took the mound once in '78 having sawed off his leg at the
knee in anger at a shoelace knot, then bitten off his glove-hand
pinky because it "was getting in the way" during
his pitching motion. "This Schilling guy...now that's
what I call playing with pain," said Sportalicious
managing editor Chet Waterhouse.
