As hunting season heats up all across the
Upper Midwest and western states, let's take a look at one
of the chief matchups and break it down categorically:
DEATH
CAPACITY |
Deer: Will charge
when cornered, and a buck's horns can do some serious
damage, but death unlikely. Best shot at killing humans
is the suicide mission running onto a highway. That
kind of bulk flying through a windshield is trouble.
Gun: Bullets generally deadly,
even when fired by a drunk. |
ADVANTAGE:
 |
| SPEED |
Deer: Excellent
speed, but not great quickness. Will stand and stare
quite awhile before gettin' a move on. Great "sideways"
speed though - front half of body can launch in near
perpendicular direction to back half. Great vision as
well - you rarely see a deer that 'accidentally' hit
a tree.
Gun: Bullet is really, really fast.

ADVANTAGE:
|
| CAMOUFLAGE |
Deer: Tan coat
and general earth tones make it tougher than you'd think
spotting it in forest; in field, more obvious, especially
with movement, but deer smart enough to hang on field's
perimeter and dart into brush and light woods for cover;
you'd think snow would help, but their ability to stay
still can neutralize the bright background.
Gun: Charcoal and wood coloring let
it blend in. "Bang" a big giveaway though.
Shiny bullet sticks out like a sore thumb, but bullet
speed more than makes up for it. |
ADVANTAGE:
 |
| OVERALL |
Gun: Until deer
get opposable thumbs, stick with the gun at any sportsbook
willing to give you odds. |
