Sportalicious! editors have pitted arguably
today's most dominating fastball pitcher, The Arizona
Diamondbacks Randy Johnson, against perhaps the
greatest hitter of all time, Boston Red Sox
great Ted Williams. Here's the results:
FASTBALL
At one time this would've been a
dead heat, strength against strength, but with Williams
frozen head limited to shouting encouragement from the
dugout, Randy can widen the strike zone.
ADVANTAGE:
CURVEBALL
A different story. Williams decapitation
could come in handy here, delaying the Bosox slugger's
aggressive reaction time just enough for him to get
power wood on the ball. And Johnson's curve is his weakest
pitch.
ADVANTAGE:
CHANGEUP
This is Johnson's trump card - a
pitch that looks like a fastball and acts like a curve.
Lucky Williams head is already off or this pitch might
just snap it off.
ADVANTAGE:
INTANGIBLES
Johnson's intimidating glare and
foreboding brushback pitch will have no effect on the
feisty, headless Ted.
ADVANTAGE:
OVERALL
A classic battle people would pay
to see. Even without his head, Williams keeps his wits
about him. In ten at-bats, we say Williams gets three
hits, one a dinger - but that's a hundred points under
his career average! Way to go, Randy.
