Strange - the scoreboard never
raised an eyebrow. |
Dusseldorf, FL - Manfredt's
Baseball Camp, which many experts consider to be the best
baseball instruction available in all America, was rocked
to its core when it was revealed Tuesday that camp founder
Karlheinz Manfredt was a Nazi prison guard during World
War Two! Manfredt, now 81, still runs infield grounder practice,
hits fungoes, and does chalk talks, and unfortunately it
was one of these talks that led to his discovery. Nine-year-old
Jacob Friedman of Oddscent, New Jersey, taped one of Manfredt's
talks and sent it to his parents. The tape included the
phrases, "your elbow WILL collapse at the 3-second
mark, Juden!..." and "...Anyone leaping over the
fence will be SHOT, especially Friedman!" Jacob included
a cloudy snapshot of what appeared to be barbed wire on
the left field foul pole. Jacob's grandfather, Sol Hurvitzem,
an 84-year-old prison camp survivor, recognized Manfredt's
voice on the tape and alerted Florida officials, who had
no problem with Manfredt's actions but received a pressuring
fax from the FBI that said simply "do something, you
idiots." Parents from around the country who sent baseball-playing
teens to this sleepy Florida town were shocked at the revelation,
though none seemed particularly eager to take their kids
back for the rest of the summer.
