Daytona
Beach, FL - Michael Waltrip, winner of this weekend’s
rain-shortened Daytona 500, had his title stripped by race officials
for driving with expired endorsement stickers. Kurt Busch, the
driver who ran second to Waltrip and reported the bad stickers,
was elevated to race champ. “I kinda hated to do it,”
said Busch, “but rules is rules.” Busch noticed on
lap 106 that Waltrip had a sticker on his trunk for “Fabreze
Oregano Fabric Softener,” a product that was discontinued
in 2001. while confirming that citing on lap 107, he also spotted
a “Mentos Avocado FreshMints” sticker, a product that
actually never got off the ground. Waltrip will be fined for that
sticker, as NASCAR rules state drivers may only display stickers
of products that are at least being market-tested in 12 to 15
cities. “I don’t blame Kurt,” said Waltrip,
“rules are…I mean, rules is rules.”
